iPad is a tablet and Laptop is a computer. iPad is not a substitute for a real computer but its more portable and easy to carry around than a Laptop. You can get emails, surf the internet, do office works etc with iPad too. And the main advantage is you can connect to cellular networks like 3G or 4G and this applies to only ipad3 which you can't with a Laptop.
Also an iPad can download photos/videos from camera, flash drive etc using the Camera Connectivity Kit. But it can't download any other files types like documents, spreadsheets.
I'm one of the sorry people who still has an iPad 1, so the not being able to take pictures is kind of a downer. The iPad is getting almost close to being a laptop in some cases though through certain apps. Pages is almost Word and can open almost any type of document. It will be interesting to see how the tablet will progress of just something to play with a something to make laptops only for power users.
